Modesto, CA: The Pirates returned to play after a short time away because of COVID infection to take on San Mateo Bulldogs. The Bulldogs came into the day at 11-0 and a constant attendee of the State Tournament and Regional Champion in consecutive years from 2012 - 2019 missing 2020 because of the pandemic cancellation all junior college games. "It is a game we look forward to. San Mateo is where we want to be and to be the best, you have to beat the best." Last years team lost 11-2 in about an hour and 15 minutes in 2020 before the season ended. "You walk in their stadium and see the banners that span the entire outfield fence and you know who you are facing." MJC managed to keep the game pretty close and lost 5-1 and played extremely well in game one of the double header. The Pirates allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 12 hits while making 2 errors in the game. San Mateo's pitcher only allowed one run on 3 hits and struck out five batters. The Pirates three hits came from Taylor Brewer (Waterford HS) Angelica Bernal (Enochs HS) and Trinity Ortiz (Modesto HS). Bernal scored the only run on Ortiz' double in the 6th inning for MJC's only run. Emmilee Boles (Dakota Ridge HS, CO) pitched all 7 innings and struck out 2 batters and walked one in her effort.
In Game 2, the Bulldogs didn't waste much time and scored Three in the first inning and one in the second inning before blowing it open in a 13 run 3rd. "It was actully pretty amazing, you would think that statistically they would pop up or ground out because not many of the balls were hit super hard, but they kept finding holes in the defense or we would make a mistake." Boles, who started her 6th game in a row and had pitched every inning this season, gave the ball to Cheyenne Juarez to finish the game. "I am proud of the girls, they had an unfortunate bad inning and just came back and hit the ball well to score 4 right back at them. Trinity Ortiz started the inning and then Keeney singled and Taylor Brewer walked to load the bases. Cheyenne Juarez doubled to left center to score them Ortiz and Keeney while Brewer advanced to 3rd base. Brewer would score a few pitches later on a passed ball and Juarez advanced to 3rd base. The last run scored when Steele Shumway (Pitman HS) grounded out to SS. Juarez held the Bulldogs scoreless in her final two innings striking out one with no walks.
The Pirates will host Chabot College on Saturday May 8th and game times begin at 12pm and 2pm (games will be livestreamed via MJC Fastpitch on Facebook)
