The MJC Pirates beat the Merced College Blue Devils in last nights match up, 3-0. The Pirates turned in an impressive performance by allowing the Blue Devils to only score 31 points in three sets. This was the first time the Pirates have beat the Blue Devils since 2013.
MJC started set one by jumping out to a 9-1 lead behind the jump serve of Brionna Sims (Pitman HS). Pirates had a well-balanced offense in the set led by outside hitter, Ava Chiesa (Turlock HS), with 3 kills. Libero Camryn Wong (Beyer HS) finished the set off by serving 7 points, Pirates win 25-8.
The Blue Devils bounced back in set 2 slowing down the Pirate offense behind some tough serving. After hitting .230% in the first set, the Pirates were held to a .062 hitting percentage in the second. Middle blocker Mikayla Kaufhardt lead the pirates with 2 kills, no errors, on 5 attempts. Setter, Lanai Torres (Orestimba HS), controlled the offense with 8 assists. Chiesa helped push the Pirates by going on two 4-point scoring runs. Pirates win, 25-16.
Set three was all the Pirates. Kylie Kriese started the set by serving the Pirates on an 11-0 scoring run. Kriese earned 2 aces. Pirates' offense couldn't be stopped, hitting an impressive .412% for the set, Pirates win 25-7.
